Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy says it carried out a missile strike on a commercial cargo ship, the MSC Sariska, which it describes as being linked to U.S. and Israeli interests. The operation, according to an IRGC statement, was conducted in response to what it called an earlier U.S. attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Sea of Oman.
The IRGC claimed that the targeted ship, sailing under a Panamanian flag, was hit near waters close to Iraq and suffered a significant explosion. It described the action as a “reciprocal operation,” stating that it was a direct response to an earlier incident involving the Iranian vessel Lian Star, which it says was struck by a U.S. missile, disabling its engine room.
U.S. authorities have not confirmed the alleged attack on the Iranian ship, and independent verification of both incidents has not been provided at this time.
The IRGC warned that further actions against Iranian maritime assets would be met with additional responses. It also said it maintains control over strategic waterways in the region, including the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route.
The developments come amid already elevated tensions in the Persian Gulf and surrounding waters, where Iran and the United States have repeatedly accused each other of destabilizing maritime security.
A ceasefire arrangement brokered earlier this year is still reportedly in place, but both sides continue to trade accusations over violations and regional military activity.
