Armed bandits attacked a secondary school in Kogi State on Wednesday, killing three people, including a vice principal, and reportedly abducting several students during the incident.
The attack occurred at Government Secondary School, Iluke Bunu, in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area while students were sitting for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Residents said the attackers stormed the community around 9:45 a.m., targeting examination centres where students from nearby communities had gathered to write their exams.
Among those killed were Vice Principal Gani Anifowose, 70-year-old Sunday Jacob Alhassan, and six-year-old Sunday Ayele. Reports from local sources indicated that at least three students and some residents were taken away by the attackers.
The Chairman of Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area, Zacchaeus Dare Michael, condemned the assault, describing it as a barbaric and unacceptable act. He extended condolences to the victims' families and assured residents that security agencies were working to bring the perpetrators to justice.
According to the Kogi State Police Command, heavily armed bandits riding about 40 motorcycles invaded the area with the suspected intention of abducting students and residents.
Police spokesperson ASP Saliu Oyiza said security personnel, including police officers, military troops, mobile police operatives, and local vigilantes, responded swiftly and engaged the attackers in a gun battle.
The security forces reportedly forced the gunmen to retreat into nearby forests. One suspected bandit was killed during the exchange of fire, while a security operative sustained gunshot injuries and is receiving treatment.
However, police authorities stated that investigations are still ongoing and that there is currently no conclusive evidence confirming a mass abduction of students.
Security operatives have continued search and rescue operations in the area as efforts intensify to apprehend the fleeing suspects and restore calm to the affected communities.
