Anambra State authorities have launched a manhunt after gunmen ambushed the convoy of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s Chief of Staff, Chief Ben Nwankwo, leaving four people dead.
The attack occurred on Sunday night along the Amansea–Awa–Ufuma Road in Orumba North Local Government Area while the convoy was returning from an official engagement attended on behalf of the governor.
According to reports, two police officers and two civilians were killed during the assault, while several others sustained injuries in the exchange of gunfire. Chief Nwankwo escaped the attack unharmed.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants emerged from nearby bushes and opened fire on the convoy, causing panic among residents in surrounding communities. The gun battle reportedly lasted several minutes before the attackers fled the scene.
In a statement, the Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Value Orientation, Law Mefor, condemned the incident and assured residents that security agencies were working to identify and arrest those responsible.
The state government described the attack as a threat to public peace and democratic order, while extending condolences to the families of the victims.
Officials also stressed that the incident would not derail ongoing security efforts aimed at reducing violent crime across Anambra State.
Police and other security agencies have intensified investigations as authorities continue efforts to track down the attackers.
