Senegalian President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has unveiled a new government, but the administration is already facing political challenges after former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko announced that his party would not participate in the cabinet.
The new government was presented days after Faye dismissed Sonko and dissolved the previous cabinet amid growing disagreements over economic policies and the country's direction. Despite both leaders belonging to the Pastef party, relations between them have deteriorated in recent months.
Sonko, who was recently elected Speaker of Parliament by lawmakers aligned with his movement, said discussions with President Faye failed to resolve differences regarding the future role of the ruling party. As a result, he declared that Pastef would not be represented in the new administration.
President Faye appointed economist Ahmadou Al Aminou Mohamed Lo as the country's new prime minister, tasking him with addressing Senegal's economic challenges, including mounting public debt. The new cabinet includes several figures linked to Pastef, although many senior party members from the previous government were left out.
The dispute highlights an increasingly visible power struggle between Faye and Sonko, whose alliance helped secure a historic electoral victory in 2024. While both leaders campaigned on promises of reform, they have recently clashed over governance, party leadership, and economic strategy.
Analysts say the rift could create uncertainty within Senegal's ruling establishment despite Pastef maintaining a strong parliamentary majority. The political tension comes as the government seeks to implement reforms and manage economic pressures facing the West African nation.
