The U.S. News & World Report has released a preview of its 2026–2027 Best Global Universities rankings, highlighting significant changes in global higher education performance ahead of the official release on June 16.
The rankings evaluate over 2,200 universities across more than 100 countries, focusing on research output, reputation, and academic impact.
China continues to strengthen its position in global academia, with 12 new universities entering the rankings this year. The country now has 30 institutions in the top 200, up from 27 last year. The growth is driven mainly by increased research publication volume and improving regional reputation scores.
However, the report also highlights a key difference in research quality indicators. While Chinese universities excel in producing a large number of publications, universities in the United States still lead in citation impact, indicating higher global influence of their research.
Despite a slight drop in total ranked institutions—from 280 to 275—the United States maintains dominance at the top of the table. Twelve U.S. universities are placed in the global top 20, and 19 appear in the top 30.
In Latin America, universities recorded strong gains, rising an average of 62 positions compared to last year. Brazilian institutions performed particularly well, securing five of the region’s top 10 spots, supported by strong research output and reputation scores.
The preview points to a gradually shifting global academic landscape, with rising competition from Asia and Latin America, while the United States continues to hold its lead in elite university rankings and research impact.
