A fire outbreak on Thursday night has destroyed several properties, including offices and shops, along Murtala Mohammed Way in the Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State, northwestern Nigeria.
The incident reportedly started near a salvage yard popularly known as the Takumbo Market before spreading to adjoining buildings, including commercial structures close to a First City Monument Bank branch.
According to a statement by the Kano State Fire Service spokesperson, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, firefighters received a distress call at about 10:54 p.m. and were immediately deployed to the scene from the state headquarters and nearby stations.
On arrival, emergency responders found a one-storey building and surrounding commercial areas, measuring about 300 by 200 feet, already engulfed in flames. They worked to contain the blaze and prevent further spread.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the fire began at the salvage yard, where a large quantity of goods was stored before it quickly extended to nearby properties. The upper floor of the Kanawa Building was affected, destroying two offices, two parlours, two toilets, and a kitchen. Two shops on the ground floor of TUSRAYS Nigeria Limited were also damaged.
Officials attributed the cause of the fire to an electrical spark.
The Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, urged residents and business owners to prioritize electrical safety and ensure proper maintenance of installations to prevent similar disasters.
He also called on the public to report fire incidents promptly to emergency services to reduce damage and save lives.
No casualties were recorded in the incident as of the time of reporting.
