President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced that more Nigerians who played key roles in the struggle against military rule will be conferred with national honours.
In a nationwide televised address on Friday to mark Democracy Day 2026, the President said the new list of awardees includes journalists, retired military officers, and other notable citizens who contributed to the return of democracy in Nigeria.
Among those mentioned are journalists Sam Omatseye, Lade Bonuola, Ike Okonta, and Muyiwa Adekeye. Also included are retired military officers Major General Ishola Williams and Major General M.A. Garba.
Tinubu stated that the full honours list will be officially released in the coming days.
He also recalled that similar national honours were awarded during the previous Democracy Day celebrations.
The announcement forms part of activities marking June 12, Nigeria’s Democracy Day, which commemorates the country’s return to civilian rule and the annulled 1993 presidential election.
