The Federal Government has launched a nationwide environmental initiative aimed at planting one million trees, beginning with a major rollout at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna.
The campaign is designed to address pressing environmental challenges such as desertification, deforestation, climate change, and biodiversity loss across Nigeria, particularly in the northern region.
The initiative is a collaboration between the Federal Ministry of Environment, the Africa Finance Corporation, the Nigerian Defence Academy, and private sector partners. It was officially launched at the NDA Biodiversity Conservation Centre.
Officials at the event described the project as a significant step toward restoring ecological balance and strengthening climate resilience. Kaduna State, which is heavily affected by advancing desertification in the north and deforestation in the south, was highlighted as a key focus area.
Representatives said the planting of one million trees would go beyond symbolism, contributing to carbon absorption, soil protection, improved rainfall patterns, and long-term ecosystem restoration.
The project also includes plans for environmental education, biodiversity conservation, green job creation, and the development of nurseries and seed banks for endangered plant species.
The Nigerian Defence Academy has been positioned as a central partner in the initiative due to its ongoing efforts to establish a biodiversity conservation centre for research and environmental training.
Officials stressed that environmental degradation poses not only an ecological threat but also a national security concern, emphasizing the need for sustainable land and resource management.
The Federal Government said the campaign aligns with Nigeria’s commitments under international climate agreements and will be expanded to other parts of the country in future phases.
