A Nepali Sherpa mountain guide who was feared dead after disappearing on Mount Everest has been found alive six days later, after he managed to crawl down toward base camp in freezing conditions.
Dawa Sherpa, 52, went missing while descending the world’s highest peak around May 29. He was last seen guiding a Polish climber, who successfully made it back, while Dawa failed to arrive at base camp, raising fears he had died in the harsh terrain of the Khumbu Icefall.
According to a local expedition operator, search efforts were delayed and initial helicopter missions were unable to locate him due to the extreme conditions and difficult visibility on the mountain.
However, on Thursday morning, a cleanup team working on the route discovered him alive as they removed ladders and ropes used during the climbing season. He was reportedly crawling through the snow when they found him.
Rescuers transported Dawa Sherpa down from the mountain and provided immediate food and water before airlifting him by helicopter to a hospital in Kathmandu for treatment.
His family, who had begun funeral rituals believing he was dead, were shocked and overjoyed after learning he had survived. His wife said they only became certain he was alive after receiving confirmation and photographs from rescuers.
His teenage daughter also described how the family had been in mourning preparations when news arrived that he had been found alive.
Dawa’s survival comes during a busy Everest climbing season that has already seen more than a thousand climbers attempt the summit, with several fatalities reported amid dangerous conditions on the mountain.
