At least 11 people were killed and dozens more injured after a drone strike hit a busy market in central Sudan on Saturday, according to a local rights monitoring group.
Emergency Lawyers, a Sudanese organization that documents human rights violations during the country's ongoing conflict, said the attack targeted the main market in Abu Zaeima, a town in North Kordofan State controlled by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The group reported that the death toll could rise as several victims remain in critical condition. No party has claimed responsibility for the strike, and it remains unclear who carried out the attack.
According to Emergency Lawyers, the market attack occurred less than 24 hours after similar drone strikes hit nearby villages and a civilian vehicle in the region.
The organization condemned the repeated targeting of civilians, describing it as a serious violation of international humanitarian law. It called for an immediate end to attacks on civilian areas and demanded accountability for those responsible.
Meanwhile, witnesses reported that another drone strike later targeted a fuel station in El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan. Medical officials said at least four injured civilians were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Drone warfare has become increasingly common in Sudan's conflict, which began in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF. The United Nations reported that at least 880 civilians were killed in drone attacks across the country between January and April this year.
Fighting has intensified in Kordofan and Blue Nile states in recent months, forcing hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes. The conflict has now entered its fourth year, leaving tens of thousands dead and displacing nearly 13 million people.
The United Nations continues to describe the situation in Sudan as one of the world's worst humanitarian and displacement crises.
