The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the detention of human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, at the Kuje Correctional Centre.
Sowore is expected to remain in custody until Wednesday, June 24, 2026, when the court proceedings will continue.
The detention followed a two-count cybercrime charge filed by the Department of State Services (DSS), accusing him of cyberstalking and criminal defamation after he allegedly described President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal” in a social media post made in August 2025.
The activist had refused to delete the posts, arguing that they were protected under his right to free expression.
In May 2026, Justice Mohammed Umar dismissed Sowore’s application seeking to stop the case, ruling that the DSS had presented enough evidence requiring him to defend himself in court.
Earlier in June, Sowore’s legal team withdrew from the case after claiming they were subjected to unfair treatment during proceedings. He later decided to represent himself and accused the judge of bias.
On June 16, 2026, the prosecution accused Sowore of deliberately delaying the trial after he failed to appear for a scheduled defence hearing. The court subsequently revoked his bail and issued a warrant for his arrest.
The court has now ordered his remand at Kuje Correctional Centre, while the case continues.
The Federal Government’s case is based on provisions of Section 24 of the amended Cybercrimes Act, 2024, with prosecutors alleging that Sowore’s online comments were false and capable of causing public disorder.
Sowore has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The trial is expected to resume later in the week.
