Argentina’s Cabinet Chief, Manuel Adorni, has resigned following a corruption investigation into his finances and spending.
Adorni, a close ally of President Javier Milei, announced his resignation on Saturday, saying he was leaving government with a “clear conscience” while preparing to defend himself.
He has been accused of illicit enrichment after investigators questioned whether some of his expenses matched his declared income. Critics pointed to several personal trips, including a luxury holiday in Aruba and a private jet trip to Uruguay.
Adorni denied wrongdoing, saying his wealth was built before joining the government and that his family trips were paid for with private funds.
He also admitted that he had failed to declare some savings in previous years and later corrected his financial declarations, involving about $500,000 that had not been reported.
President Milei had previously defended Adorni, saying he would not remove an innocent official. However, the scandal comes as Milei’s government faces growing pressure over corruption accusations and economic concerns.
Recent polling shows Milei’s approval rating has declined compared with the previous year.
