Seven residents were killed on Thursday after armed bandits attacked Sayaya community in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.
Two police officers also lost their lives during an operation to rescue kidnapped victims in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The attacks occurred amid rising insecurity in different parts of the country, with armed groups continuing to carry out attacks, kidnappings and killings.
Residents said the attackers invaded Sayaya community early Thursday morning, shooting and forcing people to flee their homes. According to witnesses, seven people were killed during the attack.
Locals alleged that the attack was carried out by a notorious bandit leader, Kachallah Muhammad Fulani, who they accused of being responsible for previous attacks and kidnappings in the area.
Some residents said the situation worsened after security personnel were withdrawn from the community, leaving them vulnerable to fresh attacks.
A community elder said the return of bandits had created fear among residents, adding that many families had relocated to safer areas.
Meanwhile, in Kaduna State, police rescued nine kidnap victims during an operation in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area.
The victims were abducted from their farms near Unguwan Sa’idu village. Security operatives engaged the bandits in a gun battle, forcing them to abandon the victims and escape into the forest.
However, while returning from the operation, the police team was ambushed by suspected bandits, leading to the death of two officers.
The Kaduna State Police Command confirmed the incident, saying efforts were ongoing to track down those responsible.
Residents in parts of Katsina said bandit attacks have increased following the abduction of retired Major General Abubakar Rabe and his wife, with communities calling on authorities to provide lasting security solutions.
