54 Injured, 18 Missing After Explosion Hits Qatar Gas Facility

An explosion at the Barzan gas facility in Ras Laffan Industrial City, Qatar, has injured 54 people and left 18 others missing, authorities said.

The incident occurred late on Sunday, June 21, during the start-up of operations at the gas plant, which supplies natural gas to Qatar’s domestic industries and power sector.

Emergency response teams from Qatar’s Civil Defence and the International Search and Rescue Group were deployed to the site. Officials said the fire caused by the explosion was contained and extinguished.

Authorities described the incident as a technical failure during operations and confirmed that there was no gas leak posing a danger to the public.

The Barzan facility plays a major role in Qatar’s energy system, providing gas for electricity generation, water desalination and local industries. The plant has a production capacity of about 1.4 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day.

The explosion has raised concerns over Qatar’s energy operations as the country works to restore production at Ras Laffan facilities affected by earlier regional disruptions.

QatarEnergy has not yet announced the full extent of the damage or when normal operations will resume. Rescue teams continue searching for the missing workers while investigations into the cause of the explosion are ongoing.
