Authorities in Sarawak, Malaysia, have released a total of 1,802 kilogrammes of ash from Quranic materials and texts containing Quranic verses into the South China Sea off Kuching waters.
The release, carried out on Saturday, involved 212 eco-friendly AQ-01 special paper bags containing ash produced from the purification process at Quran disposal centres across Sarawak.
The Head of the Quran Unit at the Sarawak Islamic Religious Department (JAIS), Abdul Rahim Rashid, said the programme was conducted as part of a routine process based on the decision of the National Fatwa Committee’s Muzakarah to protect the sanctity of damaged Quranic materials in accordance with Islamic guidelines.
He explained that Sarawak’s method differs from some other states, as the ash is placed in specially designed biodegradable bags before being released.
According to him, each bag weighs about 8.5kg and is designed to sink and decompose within a few minutes, ensuring the process is respectful and environmentally responsible.
The Quranic ash was collected from purification centres in several areas, including Sibu, Sarikei and Kuching.
The ceremony, the first large-scale event of its kind in southern Sarawak, was attended by officials from religious, maritime, police and enforcement agencies.
The programme was organised by JAIS in collaboration with several government agencies, including the Sarawak Rivers Board, Marine Police, Fisheries Department and Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency.
Meanwhile, the Sarawak Islamic Council said Quran purification centres continue to face challenges due to increasing demand and called for more centres to be established to help preserve the dignity of Quranic materials.
