The United States Embassy in London has warned its citizens in the United Kingdom to stay vigilant after the UK government increased its national terrorism threat level to “severe.”
In a security advisory released on Friday, the embassy urged Americans to remain cautious in public places and avoid crowded locations such as schools, churches, tourist attractions, and transport hubs. It also advised citizens to vary their travel routes and routines to reduce predictability and maintain a low profile.
The UK’s domestic intelligence agency, MI5, confirmed that the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre raised the threat level from “substantial” to “severe,” the second-highest classification. This level indicates that a terrorist attack is considered highly likely.
According to MI5, the decision follows a steady rise in threats from both Islamist extremists and far-right groups. While recent incidents—including the stabbing of two Jewish men in London—contributed to concerns, officials said the change was not based on a single event.
Authorities also highlighted increased risks targeting Jewish and Israeli communities, linked to ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
This marks the second security alert issued by the US Embassy in recent weeks, as officials continue to warn of threats against American and Jewish institutions across the UK.
