United States President Donald Trump has announced the deployment of 5,000 additional US troops to Poland, a move that has sparked fresh debate over Washington’s military strategy in Europe and its future commitment to NATO allies.
The announcement came after Trump praised his relationship with Polish President Karol Nawrocki, describing Poland as one of America’s closest partners in Europe. In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump linked the troop deployment directly to Nawrocki’s recent election victory and the strong ties between the two governments.
The decision follows reports that the Pentagon had recently suspended the planned rotation of more than 4,000 US soldiers to Poland, creating confusion over whether the latest announcement represents a new deployment or the reinstatement of previously cancelled plans.
According to US media reports, Trump questioned Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth about the earlier cancellation, reportedly arguing that Washington should maintain strong support for Poland because of its loyalty to the United States and NATO.
Poland already hosts around 10,000 American troops and has become a major strategic hub for NATO operations and military assistance to Ukraine since Russia’s invasion. The country is also among NATO’s highest defence spenders, allocating roughly 4.5 percent of its GDP to military spending.
Polish officials welcomed the deployment. Nawrocki described the Polish-American alliance as essential for both Polish and European security, while Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski said the move would help preserve the existing level of US military presence in the country.
Analysts say the deployment reflects Trump’s increasingly selective approach to alliances, rewarding governments viewed as politically aligned with his administration while criticising others over defence spending and foreign policy disagreements.
The move also comes amid growing uncertainty over America’s long-term military role in Europe, particularly as tensions continue between Washington and several NATO partners over Middle East policy, military spending, and support for Ukraine.
