A senior Iranian official has accused U.S. President Donald Trump of weakening diplomatic efforts and escalating tensions, claiming Washington is prioritizing confrontation over negotiations.
Mohsen Rezaei, a senior adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader and former commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, said on Saturday that recent U.S. actions demonstrate a lack of commitment to diplomacy.
In a statement posted on social media, Rezaei argued that continued restrictions on Iranian maritime activities and what he described as excessive demands during negotiations indicate that the U.S. administration is pursuing objectives beyond peaceful dialogue.
He maintained that Iran remains prepared to defend its interests and warned that continued pressure could further complicate efforts to reach a lasting settlement between the two sides.
Rezaei also reiterated previous remarks that Iran would seek to overcome economic and maritime restrictions either through negotiations or through measures it considers necessary to protect national interests.
The comments come amid ongoing efforts to secure a permanent end to hostilities following recent military tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. While talks have continued intermittently, major disagreements remain over security, sanctions, and regional stability.
Iran has tightened oversight of key maritime routes following renewed disputes over U.S. policies affecting Iranian shipping. Officials in Tehran argue that such measures violate understandings reached during previous ceasefire arrangements, while Washington maintains that its actions are intended to protect strategic interests and regional security.
Diplomatic contacts between the two countries continue, although prospects for a comprehensive agreement remain uncertain.
