More than 2,000 mourners gathered in San Diego to honour three men who were killed while trying to stop a deadly shooting at the city’s largest mosque.
The victims — security guard Amin Abdullah, Mansour Kaziha, and Nadir Awad — were remembered as heroes during an Islamic funeral prayer held on Thursday at a local park. Family members, community leaders, and police officers joined rows of worshippers for the Janazah prayer before the men were laid to rest side by side in a nearby cemetery.
According to authorities, the three men acted courageously during Monday’s attack at the Islamic Center of San Diego. Police said Abdullah exchanged gunfire with the teenage suspects and ordered an immediate lockdown at the mosque, helping protect about 140 schoolchildren and staff inside the building.
Kaziha and Awad reportedly rushed toward the mosque after hearing gunshots in an effort to assist others. All three later died from their injuries.
Imam Taha Hassane told mourners that the large turnout showed the community’s resilience despite the tragedy. People travelled from different parts of the United States to attend the memorial service.
San Diego police are investigating the shooting as a possible hate crime amid growing concerns over Islamophobia in the country. Authorities said the two teenage suspects later died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds after fleeing the scene.
The victims’ families described the men as selfless individuals whose actions likely prevented a greater loss of life.
