People in South Africa have marked Nakba Day with a solidarity gathering in Cape Town in support of Palestinians and their struggle for liberation.
The commemoration brought together activists, community leaders, and supporters from different backgrounds to remember the Nakba, or “catastrophe,” which refers to the mass displacement of Palestinians during the creation of Israel in 1948.
Participants at the event stressed the importance of international solidarity and called for continued activism in support of Palestinian rights. Speakers highlighted the role of grassroots movements, public awareness campaigns, and political advocacy in pushing for justice and freedom for Palestinians.
The gathering formed part of wider Nakba Day commemorations taking place in several countries around the world, including demonstrations and rallies supporting Palestine.
Activists at the Cape Town event also drew parallels between South Africa’s anti-apartheid history and the Palestinian cause, urging stronger global action against what they described as ongoing oppression and displacement.
Nakba Day is observed annually on May 15 and remains an important symbol of Palestinian identity, remembrance, and resistance.
