US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said a potential agreement to end the US-Israel war on Iran could be reached within days, even as US forces carried out fresh strikes on Iranian targets and tensions continue to rise across the region.
Speaking to reporters during a visit to India, Rubio said negotiations in Qatar were still ongoing and focused on drafting specific terms for an initial framework deal. He suggested progress was possible but warned the process would require “a few days” of continued discussions.
“There were some talks going on in Qatar today… it’ll take a few days,” Rubio said, adding that both sides were still exchanging proposals on key points.
At the same time, US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that American forces conducted what it described as “self-defence strikes” on missile launch sites and vessels allegedly involved in laying mines in southern Iran. The operations reportedly took place amid a fragile ceasefire environment that has been under strain since earlier escalation.
Iranian state media reported explosions near the port city of Bandar Abbas, though Tehran has not issued a full official confirmation or denial regarding the US claims. Iranian authorities have also not provided detailed commentary on the reported strikes.
A CENTCOM spokesperson said the attacks were intended to protect US forces from perceived threats, but did not release further operational details.
Analysts say the situation reflects a dual-track process in which military pressure and diplomatic negotiations are occurring simultaneously, with the outcome still uncertain.
Meanwhile, discussions in Doha reportedly include issues such as control of the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium, and the possible release of frozen Iranian assets as part of a broader settlement package.
Iran has repeatedly stated that its nuclear programme is peaceful, while the United States continues to insist that preventing nuclear weapons development is a central goal of any agreement.
Despite ongoing strikes and rising tensions, US officials maintain that diplomatic efforts have not collapsed, and negotiations remain active.
