A United States MQ-9 Reaper drone has reportedly been shot down by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) after what Tehran described as a violation of its airspace, raising fears of further escalation despite ongoing peace negotiations in Qatar.
The incident came shortly after US forces launched what Washington called “self-defence” strikes on missile launch sites and mine-laying vessels in southern Iran near the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian media also reported explosions around the port city of Bandar Abbas.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei warned that the United States would no longer enjoy a “safe haven” in the Gulf region, declaring that regional countries should no longer serve as shields for American military bases. His remarks signaled Tehran’s push for what officials describe as a “post-American order” in the Middle East.
Meanwhile, analysts say the latest attacks have created an “extremely precarious situation” that could either derail or prolong negotiations between Tehran and Washington. Experts warn that military escalation and diplomacy are now unfolding simultaneously, with uncertainty over whether the current tensions are leading toward peace or a wider conflict.
Pakistan has continued its mediation efforts between Iran and the US, with Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar arriving in New York for talks at the United Nations Security Council. China also praised Islamabad’s role in facilitating dialogue aimed at preventing a broader regional war.
The conflict has also expanded beyond Iran, with Israeli forces intensifying air strikes and artillery attacks across southern Lebanon. Lebanese authorities reported casualties following attacks in Mashghara and other towns, while further bombardments were recorded in Nabatieh and Tyre districts.
Global markets reacted nervously to the renewed violence, with Brent crude oil prices climbing amid fears of disruption around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil shipping route.
Iranian officials have warned that any future attacks would trigger a “far more severe” response extending beyond the region, while negotiations in Qatar continue under mounting pressure.
