At least four people have died and around 17 others remain missing after a nine-storey building under construction collapsed in Angeles City, north of the Philippine capital Manila, authorities said.
Emergency crews continued search-and-rescue operations on Monday, using thermal detection equipment to search for signs of life beneath the rubble. Officials said several survivors had been pulled from the debris, although hopes of finding more people alive were fading.
Most of those missing are believed to be construction workers who had been sleeping at the site when the building collapsed on Sunday.
Authorities also confirmed that a Malaysian tourist was killed after debris struck a nearby budget inn. Another guest was injured but managed to escape.
Rescue officials said the operation remains extremely dangerous because unstable debris could shift at any moment, putting both trapped victims and rescuers at risk. For that reason, much of the search effort is being carried out manually rather than with heavy machinery.
More than 26 people have been rescued so far.
Local authorities said the cause of the collapse is still under investigation, while efforts continue to identify the building owner and determine the exact number of workers present at the site.
Families of the missing have gathered near the disaster area, anxiously waiting for updates as rescuers continue around-the-clock operations.
