Emergency teams in northern Philippines have officially ended search-and-rescue efforts for 16 people still missing after a nine-storey building under construction collapsed in Angeles City, near Manila.
The collapse, which occurred early Sunday, killed at least four people, including a Malaysian national and two construction workers. After two days of intensive operations, officials said the focus has now shifted from rescue to recovery of bodies from the debris.
Authorities explained that no further signs of life were detected beneath the rubble despite the use of advanced search equipment. Initial hopes were raised when responders briefly detected possible signs of life, but those later proved inconclusive.
One missing person was later confirmed safe after reporting he had not been at the site during the incident, reducing the total number of unaccounted individuals to 16.
Rescue officials said as many as 70 workers were believed to have been on-site at the time, though most had already left for the weekend.
Families of the missing expressed grief and frustration as recovery work continues, with heavy machinery now being used to clear the wreckage.
Officials have promised a full investigation into the cause of the collapse as recovery operations continue.
