Former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, has officially defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and emerged as the party’s governorship candidate in Gombe State.
Pantami was declared the winner during the PDP governorship primary election held on Tuesday in Gombe after emerging as the sole aspirant through voice affirmation conducted by party delegates.
The chairman of the PDP electoral panel, Gregory Yenlong, announced Pantami as the party’s flag bearer for the 2027 governorship election.
Speaking after his emergence, Pantami said his decision to contest was driven by a desire to serve the people of Gombe State. He promised to lead with fairness, justice, and inclusiveness if elected governor.
His emergence sets the stage for a major political contest against Jamilu Gwamna, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Before leaving the APC, Pantami had criticised the process that produced Gwamna as the party’s consensus candidate. Although he initially pushed for direct primaries, he later withdrew from the race, citing alleged irregularities and lack of transparency in the exercise.
His move to the PDP sparked controversy within the opposition party, as some PDP aspirants opposed his participation in the governorship contest.
In a communiqué issued after an emergency meeting in Gombe, four PDP aspirants — Abdulkadir Hamma Saleh, Khamisu Ahmed Mailantarki, Usman Aliyu Garry, and Monica Kaltho — argued that a politician who had already participated in another party’s primary should not be allowed to join the PDP race afterward.
Despite the objections, PDP stakeholders endorsed Pantami as the party’s preferred candidate for the upcoming election.
