All 774 local government councils in Nigeria are expected to begin receiving direct allocations from the Federation Account following the completion of account openings with the Central Bank of Nigeria.
The development was confirmed by the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria in Niger State, Ilyasu Zakari, who said every local government in the country has now complied with the banking requirement.
Zakari explained that the move is part of ongoing efforts to implement financial autonomy for local governments and ensure direct disbursement of federal allocations without state government interference.
According to him, discussions on the process have already been communicated to the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, although no official date has been announced for the commencement of the payments.
He described the process as “a work in progress” and noted that opening CBN accounts was a key condition for the implementation of the direct funding policy.
Meanwhile, the Niger State Government has announced plans to deploy drones across major forests in the state as part of efforts to combat banditry and terrorism.
Commissioner for Investments, Aminu Sulaiman Takuma, said the operation is aimed at improving security and creating a safer environment for local and foreign investors.
He stated that forests in parts of the state have become hideouts for armed groups, affecting economic activities and discouraging investment opportunities.
Takuma added that the government is also planning to establish a gold mining and processing factory with support from an Australian company, although details of the project location and cost were not disclosed.
The commissioner said the state government is investing heavily in infrastructure development to improve transportation, trade and industrial growth across Niger State.
