The Kano State Hisbah Board has announced plans to conduct medical screening for 3,000 prospective couples ahead of a government-supported mass wedding programme in the state.
The Deputy Commander-General of the board, Sheikh Mujahedeen Aminudeen, said in a telephone interview on Friday that the exercise will cover 1,500 men and 1,500 women selected for the initiative.
According to him, the screening is intended to assess the health status of all participants before the marriages are officially conducted. The tests will include HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, genotype compatibility checks, and drug screening.
Aminudeen explained that the mass wedding programme is being organised by the Kano State Government under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, and is primarily targeted at supporting less-privileged individuals, including widows, divorcees, and unmarried women.
He added that the government will provide financial and material assistance to beneficiaries, including dowry support, beds, mattresses, pillows, and a cash grant to help start small businesses after marriage.
Participation in the medical screening is mandatory, and any couple that fails to comply will be disqualified from the programme, he warned.
The mass wedding initiative was originally introduced during the administration of former Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as part of social welfare efforts aimed at reducing hardship and promoting family stability in the state.
