The Kano State Fire Service has rescued three people, including an 18-month-old child, from separate well accidents in Kumbotso and Warawa Local Government Areas of Kano State.
The incidents occurred on Friday morning between 7:06 a.m. and 9:40 a.m., according to the agency.
In a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the service, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, firefighters first responded to a distress call from the Semegu area near El-Sadeeq Bread in Kumbotso LGA after reports that a man had fallen into a well.
Emergency responders from the state headquarters were immediately deployed to the scene, where they found an unidentified man believed to be about 40 years old trapped inside the well.
The victim was rescued unconscious and later handed over to officials of the Panshekara Police Division for further investigation.
In another incident at Madarin Taba Village in Warawa LGA, rescue officials saved a 32-year-old woman, identified as Maimuna Shitu, and her 18-month-old son, Harisu Muntari, after both reportedly fell into a well.
The Fire Service said the woman was believed to be battling mental health challenges at the time of the incident.
Rescue teams recovered the woman and her child unconscious before handing them over to community leaders and family members for medical attention and care.
Authorities said investigations are ongoing to determine the exact causes of the two incidents.
Reacting to the accidents, the Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, urged residents to properly secure wells in homes and communities to prevent future tragedies.
He also advised parents and guardians to closely monitor children and vulnerable individuals, especially those facing health challenges.
Cases involving uncovered or poorly protected wells remain a recurring safety concern in several northern Nigerian communities, sometimes leading to injuries and loss of lives.
