At least five people were killed on Friday after fresh Israeli air strikes hit several towns in southern Lebanon, according to Lebanese media reports. The attacks came as Israeli forces reportedly advanced beyond the Litani River in an expanded military operation against Hezbollah.
Lebanese authorities said four people died after an air strike struck a residential building in Abbasiyeh near the coastal city of Tyre, while another person was killed in Deir Qanoun al-Nahr. Additional air raids targeted areas including al-Baisariyah, as-Sarafand and Khirbet Selm, with several civilians reportedly injured.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that Israeli troops had crossed the Litani River, located roughly 30 kilometres north of the Israeli-Lebanese border. He stated that military operations were continuing in southern Lebanon, Beirut and the Bekaa Valley as part of efforts to weaken Hezbollah positions.
The escalation comes despite an existing ceasefire arrangement that began in April and was later extended through indirect talks mediated by the United States.
Meanwhile, Lebanese and Israeli military officials are expected to hold security discussions at the Pentagon in Washington. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun reportedly urged the United States to intensify efforts toward securing a full ceasefire, describing it as essential for restoring stability in the region.
The humanitarian situation in southern Lebanon has continued to deteriorate. UNICEF said 77 children were killed or injured within the past week, averaging about 11 child casualties every day. The agency described the figures as alarming and called for stronger protection of civilians during the conflict.
Aid organisations also warned that worsening security conditions could force humanitarian teams to withdraw from some affected areas. Medical charity Doctors Without Borders said dozens of hospitals in southern Lebanon have already shut down due to the violence, while rescue workers face growing risks during emergency operations.
Israeli forces have also issued new evacuation warnings for several towns in southern Lebanon as bombardments continue across the region.
