Israeli authorities have approved what is being described as the largest seizure of Palestinian properties in Jerusalem’s Old City since 1967, according to local reports.
The plan targets Palestinian homes and shops along Chain Street (Bab al-Silsila Road), near the western side of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound. The move could reportedly lead to the displacement of dozens of Palestinian residents and business owners.
Israeli officials say the measure is aimed at strengthening Israeli control and expanding the so-called Jewish Quarter in the area. Palestinian officials and local authorities condemned the decision, calling it a dangerous escalation and warning that it could increase forced displacement in occupied East Jerusalem.
The area around the Old City holds deep religious, political, and historical importance for Palestinians and Muslims worldwide.
International law considers Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territories illegal. In 2024, the International Court of Justice stated in an advisory opinion that Israel’s occupation and settlement expansion in Palestinian territories violate international law.
