Iran Defends Uranium Enrichment Rights, Criticizes United States Over Nuclear Commitments

Iran’s mission to the United Nations has reaffirmed that there is no legal cap on uranium enrichment levels, provided activities remain under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

In a statement shared on social media, the mission argued that international law does not impose limits on enrichment levels as long as oversight by the IAEA is maintained. It emphasized that Iran’s nuclear activities have consistently been monitored, with no evidence of diversion reported.

At the same time, Tehran strongly criticized Washington, accusing the United States of failing to meet its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). The Iranian mission described the US record on nuclear disarmament as non-compliant and called its position on Iran’s program “hypocritical.”

The statement comes amid ongoing tensions following recent military confrontations and stalled diplomatic efforts. A temporary ceasefire, reportedly brokered by Pakistan, has held since early April, but talks aimed at reaching a long-term agreement have not produced a breakthrough.

A key sticking point remains uranium enrichment. While the US has pushed for a “zero enrichment” policy, Iran insists it has the right to pursue nuclear technology for peaceful purposes under international law.

Iran has also linked any return to negotiations to the lifting of economic and maritime restrictions, including a blockade affecting its shipping. Until such measures are eased, Tehran says it will not consider concessions on its nuclear program.
