Nine inmates at a Medium Security Custodial Centre in Wudil, Kano, have successfully memorised the entire Holy Qur’an, marking a significant achievement within the correctional facility.
The accomplishment coincided with the centre’s 50th anniversary celebration. According to the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Command of the Nigeria Correctional Service, Musbahu Lawan Kofar Nasarawa, several of the inmates began their sentences with little or no knowledge of complete Qur’anic recitation. Through discipline, structured learning, and commitment, they were able to complete the memorisation.
He explained that the development reflects the service’s continued focus on rehabilitation, reformation, and reintegration, in line with the Correctional Service Act of 2019.
Officials also highlighted that the Wudil custodial centre has long served as a model facility, offering educational programs, vocational training, and moral guidance aimed at transforming inmates’ lives.
The Controller of Corrections in Kano State, Ahmed Yusuf Lakpene, praised the leadership of the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, for promoting educational and skill-based initiatives across custodial centres nationwide. He noted that such programs are essential in helping inmates become self-reliant after serving their sentences.
The Officer-in-Charge of the facility, Ibrahim Wada Ibrahim, described the achievement as evidence of effective leadership and dedication to inmate development.
Also speaking, the Vice Chancellor of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, Prof. Musa Tukur Yakasai, commended the initiative, stating that it plays an important role in reshaping inmates into responsible members of society.
