Hezbollah Secretary-General Sheikh Naim Qassem has expressed appreciation for what he described as Iran’s “continuous and sincere” support for the Lebanese resistance movement over the past five decades.
In a message addressed to Iranian cleric Ayatollah Alireza A'rafi on Wednesday, Qassem said the movement had benefited from Iranian backing since the early 1980s following a decree by Ruhollah Khomeini supporting the establishment of Hezbollah.
According to Qassem, support from Iran continued under Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and through assistance provided by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and its Quds Force.
The Hezbollah leader said Iranian support played a major role in the group’s campaign against Israeli occupation in southern Lebanon, including Israel’s withdrawal from the south in 2000 and the 2006 conflict between Hezbollah and Israel.
Qassem also said Hezbollah remains committed to confronting what he called ongoing Israeli aggression in the region. He added that despite the killing of former Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah and other senior commanders, the movement continues its operations against Israeli forces.
The Hezbollah chief further claimed that recent US-Israeli actions against Iran were aimed at weakening the broader “axis of resistance,” while expressing confidence that Iran would ultimately prevail in the confrontation.
