A gunman was shot dead by United States Secret Service officers after opening fire near a security checkpoint close to the White House in Washington, DC.
According to officials, the incident happened around 6pm on Saturday when the suspect approached a checkpoint at the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue carrying a bag. Authorities said the man pulled out a weapon and began shooting at officers stationed at the area.
Secret Service agents immediately returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect. He was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
A bystander was also injured during the exchange of gunfire, although investigators are still trying to determine whether the person was hit by bullets fired by the suspect or by return fire from security officers.
US President Donald Trump was inside the White House during the shooting but was unharmed. The White House complex was briefly placed under lockdown following the attack.
Officials confirmed that no Secret Service personnel were injured in the incident.
Witnesses at the scene reported hearing dozens of gunshots near the White House North Lawn as security forces quickly sealed off the surrounding area. Journalists and staff nearby were ordered to take cover while police and National Guard troops secured the scene.
Federal investigators, including the FBI, have joined the investigation. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the suspect or the motive behind the attack.
The shooting comes weeks after another reported security threat involving President Trump, raising fresh concerns over safety around the White House and top US officials.
