Ukraine launched one of its largest long-range drone offensives of the war overnight, targeting multiple regions across Russia, including areas around Moscow, according to Russian officials.
Russia’s Defence Ministry claimed that air defence systems intercepted and destroyed 556 Ukrainian drones during the large-scale assault, describing it as the heaviest drone attack in more than a year on the Moscow region.
At least four people were reported killed, while several others sustained injuries as drones and falling debris struck residential buildings and infrastructure facilities in different parts of western Russia.
Moscow regional governor Andrey Vorobyov said one woman died after a drone hit a private home, while rescue teams searched through rubble for another victim trapped beneath debris. Additional fatalities were reported in separate strike incidents.
Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that Russian air defences intercepted at least 74 drones approaching the capital overnight. Authorities said emergency crews responded across several districts as debris caused minor structural damage.
The barrage came days after Volodymyr Zelenskyy vowed stronger retaliatory operations following a deadly Russian strike on Kyiv that reportedly killed dozens of civilians.
Both sides have intensified aerial warfare in recent weeks after the collapse of a temporary ceasefire and completion of a prisoner exchange. Ukraine says its drone strikes target military and energy infrastructure supporting Russia’s war effort, while Moscow accuses Kyiv of attacking civilian areas.
Military analysts say the conflict is increasingly being shaped by long-range drone and missile warfare, forcing both countries to expand air defence and electronic warfare capabilities.
