Rescue teams in Laos have successfully brought five villagers to safety after they spent about 10 days trapped inside a flooded cave in Xaisomboun Province. Four men were rescued on Saturday, following the evacuation of the first survivor a day earlier.
The group had entered the cave in search of gold and other minerals before heavy rainfall triggered flash flooding, cutting off their escape route. Rescue divers from Laos, Thailand, and other countries worked through difficult conditions, navigating narrow, water-filled passages with poor visibility to reach the trapped men.
The survivors were found alive on Wednesday on a rocky ledge roughly 300 metres from the cave entrance. Unable to evacuate them immediately, rescuers supplied food, water, blankets, and other essentials while preparing a safe extraction plan.
Images released by rescue teams showed the men emerging exhausted and covered in mud. Some required assistance and medical attention after leaving the cave.
Authorities say two members of the original group remain missing. Rescue operations are continuing deeper inside the cave system, where flooding still poses a major challenge.
Local officials noted that residents in the mountainous region often enter caves in search of gold despite warnings about the dangers, especially during the rainy season.
