A 70-year-old pilgrim from Nasarawa State, Hajiya Rukayya Haliru, has died in the holy city of Makkah during the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage after a brief illness.
The death was confirmed by the Nasarawa State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board in a statement issued by its Executive Secretary, Mallam Idris Ahmad-Almakura, through the board’s spokesperson, Abdulrazaq Muhammed.
According to the board, the deceased was from Keffi Local Government Area and became ill while performing the pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia. She reportedly passed away despite receiving immediate medical treatment.
Officials of the pilgrims board and members of her family were said to have supervised arrangements for her burial in line with Islamic traditions. Her Janazah prayer was held at the Grand Mosque in Makkah before she was laid to rest.
The board described the incident as a painful loss to Nasarawa State and the Muslim community, while urging other pilgrims to pay close attention to their health and quickly report any medical concerns to healthcare officials attached to the Hajj mission.
A family representative, Abdulwab Aboki, commended the board for its support and transparency throughout the process and prayed for Allah to grant the deceased Aljannatul Firdaus.
The Nasarawa State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board also reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare and safety of all pilgrims from the state currently participating in the 2026 Hajj exercise in Saudi Arabia.
