A suspected drone attack near the UAE’s Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant has heightened concerns over the security of critical infrastructure in the Gulf amid rising regional tensions linked to the Iran conflict.
Authorities in the United Arab Emirates said a drone strike caused a fire near an electrical generator outside the Barakah facility in Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra region. Officials confirmed there were no injuries and said radiation levels remained normal, while operations at the nuclear plant were unaffected.
Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant is the UAE’s first and only nuclear power station and supplies nearly 25 percent of the country’s electricity needs through four nuclear reactors.
The UAE condemned the incident as a “terrorist attack” and warned it reserved the right to respond to threats against its national security. Regional countries including Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait also denounced the attack.
No group immediately claimed responsibility, though officials suggested the drones may have originated from areas linked to Iran-backed groups. Iran has denied involvement and has not publicly commented on the incident.
The International Atomic Energy Agency expressed concern over the attack, warning that military activity near nuclear facilities could pose serious environmental and humanitarian risks.
Experts say any direct strike on a nuclear facility could potentially damage critical systems and release radioactive materials, threatening public health and water supplies across the Gulf region.
