The Borno State Government has temporarily closed and relocated Government Day Secondary School, Mussa, in Askira/Uba Local Government Area following the abduction of 42 students by suspected insurgents.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the governor’s spokesperson, Dauda Illiya, the decision was announced during a visit by the Commissioner for Education, Lawan Wakilbe, to the affected community on Monday.
The visit was part of ongoing government efforts to respond to the attack, which occurred last week. It followed an earlier visit by Governor Babagana Zulum, who assured residents that security operations were underway to rescue the abducted students safely.
During the community meeting, officials met with local leaders, parents of the victims, and military representatives, including officers from the 115 Battalion in Askira. The government expressed sympathy to families and reaffirmed its commitment to restoring safety in schools across the area.
As an immediate security measure under the Safe Schools Initiative, authorities ordered the temporary closure of the school and approved its relocation to Government Secondary School, Uba, where affected students will continue their education under tighter security conditions.
Parents of the abducted students appealed for urgent rescue efforts, describing the emotional trauma caused by the incident, while also praising the state government’s swift response.
The delegation also inspected other schools and projects in the region to assess security conditions and ensure compliance with safety measures before reopening learning facilities.
The abduction, which took place on May 16, involved students and pupils taken from a school and nearby homes in Mussa community, sparking renewed concerns over insecurity in parts of Borno State.
