Court Clears Goodluck Jonathan to Contest 2027 Presidential Election

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled that former President Goodluck Jonathan is eligible to participate in the 2027 presidential election.

The judgment came after a suit was filed by Johnmary Jideobi seeking to prevent Jonathan from contesting or being presented by any political party. The plaintiff also asked the court to stop the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from accepting or publishing Jonathan’s name as a candidate.

Delivering the ruling, Justice Peter Lifu dismissed the case, stating that Jonathan remains qualified to run for president under the Nigerian Constitution. The court also noted that earlier decisions by higher courts had already affirmed his eligibility.

The judge described the suit as an abuse of court process and ruled that the plaintiff lacked the legal standing to bring the case, since no personal harm had been established.

In addition, the court imposed fines on the plaintiff for filing what it considered a frivolous action and dismissed requests for the judge’s withdrawal from the case.

The ruling clears uncertainty over Jonathan’s political future and confirms his eligibility ahead of the 2027 general election.
