At least six people were killed and dozens wounded after Russia launched what Ukrainian officials described as one of the longest and most intense aerial assaults of the war, targeting several cities across Ukraine overnight.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the attacks lasted for hours on Wednesday, striking the capital Kyiv, the western city of Lviv, and the southern port city of Odesa.
According to Ukrainian authorities, Russia used waves of drones in an apparent attempt to overwhelm the country’s air defence systems before possible missile strikes.
Regional officials reported casualties in multiple areas. In Kherson region, a woman was killed after a drone hit a passenger bus in Bilozerka. Three people also died in Rivne region following another drone strike, while attacks in Kharkiv and Zaporizhia regions killed two elderly men and damaged homes and agricultural facilities.
Images released from Odesa showed destroyed vehicles and damaged residential buildings following the overnight bombardment.
The latest escalation came despite renewed comments from United States President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin suggesting the war could be nearing a settlement.
Trump told reporters that he believed Moscow and Kyiv may soon reach an agreement to end the conflict, while Putin recently claimed the war was “possibly coming to an end”.
However, fighting continued on both sides of the border. Russian officials said Ukrainian drone attacks injured civilians in Bryansk and Belgorod regions, while Moscow claimed its air defences intercepted and destroyed 286 Ukrainian drones overnight across several regions and over the Black Sea.
The war between Russia and Ukraine has continued for more than four years, with both countries intensifying drone warfare alongside ongoing battlefield clashes.
