Where did the name come from?
The word “Suffa” refers to a shaded platform or sheltered area attached to the Prophet’s Mosque (Masjid an-Nabawi) in Madinah. This space became a place where poor and homeless companions stayed. Because they lived there, they were called “People of the Suffa.”
Who were they?
The Ashab al-Suffa were mostly:
Poor migrants (Muhajirun) who had no family or shelter in Madinah
Young companions seeking knowledge
Individuals who chose to stay close to the Prophet ﷺ to learn directly from him.
They did not have stable jobs or homes, so they lived in the mosque and relied on support from the Muslim community.
Their way of life
Their lifestyle was very simple and focused on worship and learning:
They spent most of their time in prayer, remembrance of Allah, and studying the Qur’an
They were often given food by the Prophet ﷺ or wealthy companions like Abu Bakr and others
They lived with patience, humility, and trust in Allah (tawakkul)
Despite poverty, they remained committed to Islam and never complained.
The Prophet ﷺ himself cared for them and would often sit with them, teach them, and encourage others to support them.
Their importance in Islam
The Ashab al-Suffa played a very important role in early Islamic society:

Many of them later became famous scholars and narrators of Hadith
They helped spread Islamic knowledge after the Prophet’s time.
