When you visit a grave in Islam, especially the grave of your parents or loved ones, the main purpose is to make dua for them, remember death, and seek mercy from Allah for the deceased. It is a moment of humility, reflection, and spiritual connection.

What to Read When Visiting the Grave in Islam

1. Say Salam to the deceased.

The Prophet ﷺ taught this greeting:

> السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلَ الدِّيَارِ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُسْلِمِينَ، وَإِنَّا إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ بِكُمْ لَاحِقُونَ

Transliteration:

As-salāmu ʿalaykum ahla d-diyāri mina l-mu’minīna wal-muslimīn, wa innā in shā’ Allāhu bikum lāḥiqūn.

Meaning:

Peace be upon you, O believers and Muslims of this place. Indeed, we will, if Allah wills, join you.

2. Dua for forgiveness for the deceased.

You can make any sincere dua, but a strong Qur’anic one is:

> رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لَهُمْ وَارْحَمْهُمْ

Transliteration:

Rabbighfir lahum warhamhum.

Meaning:

My Lord, forgive them and have mercy on them.

3. Special dua for parents.

If it is your parents’ grave:

> رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِوَالِدَيَّ وَارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا

Meaning:

My Lord, forgive my parents and have mercy on them as they raised me when I was small.

4. General dua for all Muslims in the grave.

> اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِجَمِيعِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ

Meaning:

O Allah, forgive all believing men and women.

5. Optional: Short Qur’anic recitation.

Recite Surah Al-Fatihah

“O Allah, accept this and give its reward to them.”
