What is Tawheed (Islamic Monotheism)?

Tawḥeed (توحيد)—Islamic monotheism—is the central and most essential belief in Islam. The word comes from the Arabic root “waḥḥada”, meaning to make one, unify, or declare oneness. 

In Islamic belief, Tawḥeed means affirming that Allah is absolutely One, unique, and without any partner in every sense—in His Lordship, His right to be worshipped, and His perfect names and attributes.

Tawḥeed is not just a theological concept; it shapes a Muslim’s worldview, actions, purpose, and relationship with the Creator. 

It is the message preached by all prophets—from Adam to Muhammad (peace be upon them all).

The Three Categories of Tawḥeed:

To better understand Tawḥeed, scholars explain it in three complementary aspects:

1. Tawḥeed ar-Rubūbiyyah (Oneness of Lordship).

This means believing that Allah alone is the Creator, Owner, and Sustainer of the entire universe.

He alone gives life and causes death

He controls provision (rizq), rain, and all natural processes

Nothing happens except by His will and power.

This belief establishes that Allah is the ultimate authority over all existence.

2. Tawḥeed al-Ulūhiyyah (Oneness of Worship).

This is the core practical aspect of Tawḥeed—directing all acts of worship exclusively to Allah alone.

Acts of worship include:

Prayer (Ṣalāh)

Supplication (Du‘ā)

Fasting (Ṣawm)

Charity (Zakāh)

Sacrifice, hope, fear, trust, and reliance.

No act of worship should be directed to anyone else—whether prophets, saints, angels, or any created being. This is the meaning of the declaration:

“Lā ilāha illā Allāh” (There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah).

3. Tawḥeed al-Asmā’ waṣ-Ṣifāt (Oneness of Names and Attributes).

This means affirming all the beautiful names and perfect attributes of Allah as mentioned in the Qur’an and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), without:

Distorting their meanings

Denying them

Asking “how” (in a way that resembles creation)

Comparing Allah to His creation.

For example, Allah is:

Ar-Raḥmān (The Most Merciful)

Al-‘Alīm (The All-Knowing)

Al-Qadīr (The All-Powerful).

His attributes are perfect, unique, and beyond human limitation.

The Importance of Tawḥeed:

It is the first and greatest pillar of Islam

It is the purpose of creation: to worship Allah alone

It is the message of every Prophet and Messenger

It is the foundation upon which all deeds are built and accepted

It is the key to true success in this life and the Hereafter.

Without Tawḥeed, acts of worship lose their value in the sight of Allah.

The Opposite of Tawḥeed: Shirk:

The opposite of Tawḥeed is Shirk—associating partners with Allah in any form. This can occur by:

Worshipping others besides Allah

Believing others share in His power or control

Attributing divine qualities to created beings

In Islam, Shirk is considered the gravest sin if a person dies without repenting from it.

Tawḥeed is to single out Allah alone in His Lordship, His right to be worshipped, and His names and attributes. It is the heart of Islam, the essence of faith, and the path to true peace, purpose, and salvation.
