Tayammum is a form of dry purification in Islam that replaces wudu (ablution) or ghusl (full ritual bath) when water is not available or when using water may cause harm.
It is performed using clean earth such as soil, sand, or dust. The purpose is to allow a Muslim to remain in a state of ritual purity so they can perform salah (prayer) and other acts of worship.
To perform tayammum, a person first makes the intention in their heart to purify themselves. Then, they lightly strike or place their hands on clean earth. After that, they wipe their face with both hands. They repeat the action on the earth again, then wipe both hands—one over the other.
Tayammum is a mercy in Islam, showing flexibility in worship when normal purification with water is not possible. It remains valid until water becomes available or the condition requiring it ends.
When Is Tayammum Allowed?
You can perform tayammum if:
Water is not available
You are ill or using water may worsen your condition
There is insufficient water for both drinking and purification
Accessing water is difficult or dangerous.
What You Need.
Clean, dry earth (soil, sand, stone, or dust).
Step-by-Step Method
1. Make Intention (Niyyah)
Silently intend in your heart to perform tayammum for purification before الصلاة (Salah).
2. Say “Bismillah”
Begin by saying Bismillah (in the name of Allah).
3. Strike Hands on Clean Earth
Lightly place or strike both hands on clean earth, sand, or dust.
4. Wipe the Face
Wipe your entire face once with both hands.
5. Strike Hands Again
Lightly strike your hands on the earth a second time.
6. Wipe the Hands and Arms
Wipe your right hand over your left hand (up to wrists or elbows depending on school)
Then wipe your left hand over your right.
Important Notes.
Tayammum replaces both wudu and ghusl when necessary
It becomes invalid when water becomes available again
It is valid for one prayer (in some opinions) or multiple prayers (in others) unless broken
Use only clean and pure earth materials.
Summary.
Tayammum is a simple and merciful alternative in Islam that ensures you can maintain purity and perform prayers even in difficult situations. It involves intention, using clean earth, wiping the face, and wiping the hands.
