How to perform Tahiyatul masjid prayer

How to perform Tahiyatul masjid prayer

Tahiyyatul Masjid (تحية المسجد) is a voluntary (Sunnah) prayer performed when a Muslim enters a mosque as a way of greeting the house of Allah.

What is Tahiyyatul Masjid?
It is a two ركعات (rak‘ahs) prayer offered before sitting down in the mosque. It shows respect and humility upon entering the مسجد (mosque).

Evidence from Hadith:

The Prophet ﷺ said:
> “When one of you enters the mosque, he should not sit until he prays two rak‘ahs.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim

How to Perform It:
Make intention (niyyah) for Tahiyyatul Masjid

Pray 2 rak‘ahs like any regular Sunnah prayer

It can be short and simple (e.g., Surah Al-Fatiha + any short surah)

When to Pray:
Immediately after entering the mosque

Before sitting down

Important Notes.
If the obligatory prayer (Fard) has already started, join the congregation instead—this counts and replaces Tahiyyatul Masjid.

If you enter during times when voluntary prayers are discouraged, scholars differ, but many still allow it because of its specific reason.

If you sit unintentionally, you can still stand and pray it.

Virtue.
Tahiyyatul Masjid is a simple act with great reward. It prepares your heart for worship and reminds you that the mosque is a sacred place dedicated to Allah.
