The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has alerted Nigerians to a rise in cyber fraud attempts targeting individuals and businesses through deceptive digital channels.
In an official statement, the apex bank said it has detected a surge in fraudulent emails, text messages, and fake websites impersonating the CBN. These schemes are designed to mislead the public into disclosing confidential banking details or clicking on harmful links.
The bank noted that some of the messages falsely claim to offer financial opportunities, regulatory approvals, or policy updates, making them appear credible to unsuspecting victims. It warned that such tactics are part of coordinated efforts by cybercriminals to exploit public trust.
The CBN advised Nigerians to exercise caution when handling unsolicited communications, especially those requesting sensitive information such as account numbers, passwords, or verification codes. It stressed that it does not request personal banking details through unofficial channels.
Members of the public were encouraged to verify any suspicious claims directly through the CBN’s official platforms and to report fraudulent activities to relevant authorities.
The warning highlights growing concerns over digital security threats within Nigeria’s financial system and underscores the need for increased vigilance among citizens.
