Oluremi Tinubu Inaugurates 50 CNG Buses, Launches ₦1bn Empowerment Programme in Edo

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has inaugurated 50 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses and launched a ₦1 billion economic empowerment programme targeting 5,000 beneficiaries in Edo State.

The initiatives were unveiled on Thursday in Benin City as part of efforts by the state government to improve public transportation, support small businesses and expand economic opportunities for women, youths and vulnerable groups.

Speaking at the event, Mrs Tinubu commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for introducing the programmes, describing them as significant steps towards improving livelihoods and promoting economic growth in the state.

She expressed pleasure at participating in the inauguration of the CNG buses, which she said were intended to benefit residents of Edo State.

The First Lady also disclosed that the empowerment programme would provide ₦200,000 each to 5,000 beneficiaries to support their livelihoods, strengthen small businesses and promote financial independence.

She urged the beneficiaries to use the funds productively to grow their businesses and improve their economic circumstances.

Earlier, Governor Okpebholo welcomed Mrs Tinubu to the state, describing her visit as a demonstration of concern for the welfare and development of Edo residents.

According to the governor, the two initiatives address key needs of the population: access to affordable transportation and economic empowerment, particularly for women and small-business operators.

He said the introduction of CNG-powered buses would help make public transportation more accessible, affordable and efficient, while also supporting the transition to cleaner energy.

Okpebholo added that the empowerment programme was designed to strengthen beneficiaries’ economic activities and improve their capacity to sustain their livelihoods.

Emphasising the importance of supporting women economically, the governor said empowering women contributes to stronger families, more resilient communities and broader societal prosperity.

He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his leadership and support, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to governance, economic development and the expansion of opportunities across Edo State.

The governor said his government would continue working towards an Edo where development reaches all communities and economic opportunities are accessible to every citizen.

The inauguration of the buses and launch of the empowerment programme form part of the state government’s efforts to improve transportation services and strengthen economic participation among residents.
