The Federal Government has launched the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, urging Nigerians to identify and begin using their new postcodes.
The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, announced the launch in a post on X on Thursday, describing the initiative as a major step towards making locations across Nigeria easier to identify and connecting people and businesses to essential services and opportunities.
The system, operated by the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), assigns a unique 11-character digital postcode to every addressable building in Nigeria.
The postcode is designed to provide a precise, Geographic Information System (GIS)-enabled reference for identifying locations.
According to Tijani, the system will help businesses reach customers beyond their immediate neighbourhoods, enable families to provide accurate locations during emergencies, and assist government agencies in delivering essential services to communities.
“Every Nigerian deserves to be found. Every business deserves the chance to reach its customers. And every community deserves to be within reach of opportunity,” Tijani said.
He added that accurate postcodes would form part of the digital infrastructure required to support President Bola Tinubu’s ambition of building a $1 trillion economy.
“As we work towards the President’s ambition for a $1 trillion economy, we must build the foundations that allow more Nigerians to participate, trade and prosper. This is one of those foundations,” the minister said.
