A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has accused President Bola Tinubu of worsening Nigeria’s condition, saying the country has deteriorated to what he described as “stage-four cancer.”
Momodu made the remarks while reacting to President Tinubu’s Independence Day address on Thursday, October 2, 2026, saying the speech turned what should have been a day of celebration into one of lamentation.
He criticised Tinubu for describing Nigeria, when he assumed office in 2023, as a cancer patient that was barely surviving through the use of painkillers.
In a post on X, the former presidential candidate said that if Tinubu considered himself a celebrated surgeon, he should have stabilised the country rather than allowing its condition to worsen.
Momodu said Nigeria was probably at stage two of the crisis when Tinubu took office and argued that the situation should have been prevented from deteriorating further.
He also criticised the administration’s early economic decisions, describing Tinubu’s first major prescription as a mistake.
“Dear Mr. President, please allow me to wish you a Happy Independence Day on our 66th anniversary. I won’t spend too much time, Sir.
“I just watched and heard your speech on TV, and I have to be honest, I wasn’t really impressed. Today was meant to be a happy day, but your speech made it feel like a sad day instead,” Momodu said.
His comments came as political reactions continued to trail President Tinubu’s Independence Day address and his assessment of Nigeria’s economic condition since he assumed office.
